Job: research engineer specialized in deep learning tools

The University Library (La Contemporaine) of Paris Nanterre University is seeking a research engineer for the development of deep learning tools on printed corpora (dispatches, press, posters, illustrations), for a 12-month contract starting in October, 2020.

The position is within the framework of the Boîte à Outils d’Intelligence Artificielle (BaOIA) (Artificial Intelligence Toolbox) project, which is part of a CollEx-Persée call for projects. It consists of developing a toolbox for analyzing massive data for projects devoted to the human and social sciences, and to testing these tools on three corpuses: digitized 20th century posters, both French and international (La contemporaine); travel guides (BnF); and a corpus of dispatches from Soviet news agencies (La contemporaine).

Primary tasks include:

  • Developing and implementing deep learning tools
  • Defining data processing protocols and implementing the data management plan
  • Running the project research seminar and hackathon
  • Writing project documentation and research notes on the project notebook
  • Developing the dissemination platform

Candidates must have mastered deep learning software (Python, R, TensorFlow, Keras) in machine vision and text analysis, as well as interfaces such as JupyterLab. They should have practical experience with heritage standards (XML, METS, IIIF);
and project monitoring and versioning (Git-Hub, Zenodo).

The candidate must hold a PhD or Master 2 degree in the fields of computer engineering, digital engineering, or digital humanities.
